My Dear Parishioners,
Someone recently asked me about the Annual Rice Bowls typically put out for the season of Lent, and it wasn’t until that moment that I realized that we did not receive them this year. I contacted Catholic Relief Services to see what we could do, but in the meantime, if you set aside whatever money you save as a result from fasting or having lighter meals during Lent, you can always drop that money off in an envelope marked clearly for the “Rice Bowl” at the end of Lent and I will forward the money to Catholic Relief Services. I apologize for not realizing it sooner. Also there still are a few copies of the recently revised Matthew Kelly book, Perfectly Yourself available for free on the back tables. A couple of people have told me that it was very helpful. Please consider taking one as your Lenten meditation. I also want to remind you of the additional time for confessions. Confessions are now heard every Wednesday in Lent from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. in addition to the usual Saturday 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
This weekend our second collection is for the church in Africa. Archbishop Chaput has asked that it be taken up in all the parishes on any one of the Sundays in Lent. I am including his letter for this collection below.
God Bless You,
February 14, 2018
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa was founded on the basic principles of Saint John Paul II’s call to action in Ecclesia in Africa and the adoption of the statement A Call to Solidarity with Africa from the Bishops of the United States.
Africa faces the economic and social hurdles of enormous debt, epidemics, severe poverty, and political unrest. In spite of these challenges, Catholicism is flourishing amid these harsh circumstances.
Your support of the Solidarity Fund for the Church in Africa assists in the delivery of basic pastoral care which includes religious education, seminary formation and youth ministry. It also supports important projects such as pastoral care for the sick.
The collection for the Church in Africa will be conducted in your parish on a weekend during Lent as determined by your Pastor. On behalf of our brothers and sisters in Africa, I am grateful for your continued generosity.
Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,
+Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap.
Archbishop of Philadelphia
