My Dear Parishioners,
Late summer is the time to look to the future and the resumption of the academic year for both our school and CCD programs. I hope that it has been and continues to be a restful and restorative summer vacation for all of you. In terms of Sacramental Preparation, St. Joseph Parish will continue participating in the combined program with St. Robert Parish as we have in the past. This cuts down on the number of meetings parents have to attend, providing both a good sacramental preparation for parents along with the opportunity to tailor specific instructions and questions to the individual parish situations. We have been alternating which parish hosts the joint program.
This year St. Joseph has the privilege of hosting the parent prep class for both parishes. Our Parent Sacramental Prep Class will be on Oct. 22, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. here at St. Joseph Parish. The afternoon is arranged so that every parent attends an opening prayer, and then proceeds to the specific class(es) that pertain(s) to their child and to their respective parish. This one afternoon of preparation will take place here both in our church, and also in our lower hall. The sessions are for the parents of children receiving Penance & First Holy Communion (3rd Grade), as well as parents of those making Confirmation (6th Grade). Both SJR school parents and St. Joseph CCD parents of children involved will be notified soon. Please note that St. Robert’s parents from both SJR and St. Robert’s CCD classes will also be present.
As I mentioned in last week’s column, parents of those students making confirmation this year, please have your child’s sponsor begin the process of getting a Certificate or Letter of Eligibility to act as sponsor. If your sponsor is a member of St. Joseph parish, they must get their letter from our church. The purpose of the Letter is to verify that the sponsor meets the requirements of the Church. One of the most basic requirements is that the person comes to Mass regularly. If that is not the case, they may need some time to reestablish their regular practice. Please give them as much notice as possible.
We will have our Confirmation retreat early this year. It is scheduled for Thursday, September 21, 2017. The retreat is to help those preparing to receive the sacrament of Confirmation by giving them some time to pray and grow closer to the Lord and the Holy Spirit. Our students also have the opportunity to learn about a local saint. The reason we are having the retreat a little earlier is because the St. Katharine Drexel Shrine, run by the Blessed Sacrament Sisters, will be closed for good shortly. We have gone to this shrine for a number of years and the Sisters give a very nice presentation to our young people. They can no longer afford to keep the shrine running, so we will be able to have our confirmation retreat there one final time before it closes.
God Bless you,
